How to Make Chocolate Covered Mint Patties at Home

Cool, creamy, and wrapped in rich chocolate — these homemade chocolate covered mint patties are a refreshing and indulgent treat you can make with just a few pantry staples. They’re perfect for holiday gift boxes, dessert tables, or an after-dinner sweet.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream (plus more if needed)
  • 8 oz semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped or in chips
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon coconut oil or shortening (for smoother chocolate coating)

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the powdered sugar, softened butter, peppermint extract, and heavy cream.
  • Mix until a smooth, thick dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a few more drops of cream. If it’s too sticky, add a bit more powdered sugar.
  • Roll the dough into small balls and flatten them slightly into discs using your hands or the bottom of a glass.
  • Place the mint discs on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 15 to 20 minutes until firm.
  • While the patties are chilling, melt the chocolate (and coconut oil or shortening, if using) in a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water or in short bursts in the microwave. Stir until smooth.
  • Using a fork, dip each mint patty into the melted chocolate, letting the excess drip off before placing it back on the parchment-lined sheet.
  • Once all patties are coated, place them in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes until the chocolate is set.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Chill your patties well before dipping to ensure they keep their shape.

  • Use high-quality chocolate for a professional finish.

  • Add coconut oil to melted chocolate for smoother dipping.

  • Store in layers with parchment between to avoid sticking.

  • Customize with flavored extracts, food coloring, or decorative toppings.
