A rich, self-saucing chocolate dessert with a tender cake layer on top and a luscious fudge sauce underneath. Perfect served warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
1/4 cup (25 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (120 ml) whole milk
1/4 cup (60 ml) unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
1/2 cup (110 g) packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup (25 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/4 cups (300 ml) hot water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch (20 cm) square baking dish.

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, 3/4 cup (150 g) sugar, 1/4 cup (25 g) cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

  • Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until combined. Spread batter into prepared dish.

  • In another bowl, mix 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar, brown sugar, and 1/4 cup (25 g) cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over batter.

  • Carefully pour 1 1/4 cups (300 ml) hot water over the top. Do not stir.

  • Bake for 35–40 minutes until the top is set. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm for best texture and flavor. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat before serving. Add a splash of milk before reheating if the sauce thickens too much.
